  • [Viewpoint] Market goes cynical!

    edisongill

The issue of Edison Chan's nude pictures is no longer a hot gossip but its residual effects have kept rippled. At least, the two key persons, Edison and Gillian, still find themselves powerless to step out of the hot water. Their mounting popularity seems to fade out all of a sudden, and the public increasingly get hatred of them. What baffles me is the fact that the issue is a matter of private affairs. However, how come they have to be penalized by market overtly? Little harm they did to others in society, and primarily they were victims of the event, especially on its female part. This reveals how cynical our world goes: their full body exposure makes people no market interest and novelty in, and even feel disgusted with, their performance of any forms. It deals with market value more than social ethics.

  • [Grammar & Usage] "A dream come true” 的 “come”點解沒

    2004-10-23-dream-bless

    愛好英文寫作的同學都知道,我們往往會用getcomegoturn等字去取替is, am , are等等verb-to-be的字,一來在表達方面沒有如此沉悶;二來當我們所表達帶有 “becoming”的含意時,便會用上以上這些字,更會引申另一種用法。

    我們先看看下例的例句︰

    A dream come true

    上句中 “come true” “come”是以past participle的時態表達,而 “come true”兩字是一起處理的,在英文語法上是扮演qualifier,用來修飾 a dream這名詞。亦正因如此,上句不是一句完整句子,若你翻查oxford的字典,有以下的例句︰

Winning the medal was like a dream come true.

    所以,同學仍要緊記,若你那一句是完整句子,又是現在式的,那麼,a dream依然是要 “comes true”

  • [Grammar & Usage] More of VS More than

    WiFiZone

    有同學問我,他在南華早報看到以下一句︰

Charles Mok, chairman of the Internet Society, said with the government opening wireless internet connections in public facilities this summer, more of Hong Kong’s 5 million internet users were set to watch the Games through the new media platform.

    他問我,上句何解要用more of 而不是more than,兩者用在上句意思會有何分別?

    分別很簡單,用more of 時,意思是指那五百萬互聯網使用者中多了人數在街上上網;而用more than 時,意思則是多過五百萬互聯網使用者在街上上網。

  • [Grammar & Usage] Two negatives : a single negative meaning

    1

    有同學問我,有首Arctic Monkeys 的英文歌 "A Certain Romance",內裏有一句歌詞是這樣的︰

The point’s that there ain’t no romance around there.

    同學問︰「Alex,根據歌詞的前文後理,該句的意思是想說『沒有浪漫的』,但為何該句裏有兩個negatives  (“ain’t” “no”)?」

    原因是這樣的,有很多英式或美式的方言(dialects)會有機會使用兩個或以上的負面字去強調一個負面的意思。我多舉一例:

I ain’t find nobody in the room.

這句的意思其實是 “I haven’t find anybody in the room”。

We would walk past each other like strangers.
